Why do we enjoy scents so much? Science has actually found that fragrance isn’t just a scent, it incites emotion. It helps with clarity and focus, easing insomnia, alleviating feelings of stress, providing relief from headaches, and even activating the immune system.
By becoming more aware of the way specific odors affect you personally, you may be able to enhance your health, well-being, and mood. Smell and emotion are rooted in the same network of brain structures, the limbic system. Since they are connected, it is no surprise that a glitch in one can contribute to problems with the other. Studies show that a decline in the sense of smell can lead to depression.
Smell can also be used to deliver instant relaxation says Psychologist Pamela Dalton. Pick a distinctive odor and pair that aroma with a calming meditation session. After a few sessions, the odor itself will elicit a relaxed state, even when you don’t have time to meditate.
So, How do you want to feel?
*Aromas have different effects on everyone, but these natural fragrances are odors for the masses*
Peppermint fragrance/essential oil: generally invigorating, it increases activity in the brain area that wakes us up in the morning.
Jasmine fragrance/essential oil: sleep aid, the scent of jasmine in your bedroom leads to a more restful night of sleep and a great level of alertness the following day.
Lavender fragrance/essential oil: generally relaxing, exposure to lavender scent can decrease heart rate and alleviate anxiety. Our Peace of Mind body butter contains both lavender and peppermint essential oil
Vanilla fragrance/essential oil: increases happiness, one study found that smelling vanilla increased feelings of joy and relaxation.
Cinnamon fragrance/essential oil: focuses your mind, it can boost brain power. A study showed that those who smelled cinnamon noticeable improved cognitive functions such as memory, motor response, and attention span.
Citrus: calming, citrus related aromatherapy was found to be even more effective than antidepressants. Our Brown sugar body butter contains bergamot essential oil and our Show me Love body butter contains grapefruit essential oil
Now that you have a better understanding of the science behind fragrance and mood you can select your fragrances based on the mood you desire to create.
Happy healing everyone, see you next week!
