4. Phthalates


Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products, such as toys, vinyl flooring and wall covering, detergents, lubricating oils, and food packaging. 5. Triclosan


This is a synthetic antibacterial agent that may disrupt thyroid function and has been linked to many cancers.


Usually found in: sops, mouthwash, shaving cream, deodorant, and toothpaste.


6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)


This detergent is responsible for making products foam, lather, and bubble. The highest risk of using products with this detergent is irritation of the eyes, skin, mouth, and lungs. For people with sensitive skin, this chemical may also clog pores and cause acne.


Usually found in 90% of personal care products that foam, later, or bubble.


7. DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (Triethanolamine)


These chemicals have ammonia-like odors and cause irritation of the nose, throat, and skin.


Usually found in: facial cleansers, sops, eye makeup, fragrances, hair products, and sunscreens


8. DMDM Hydantoin & Urea


These preservatives often release formaldehyde and cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches, and loss of sleep.


Usually found in: cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners, detergents, and skincare products


9. Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)


Parabens are not always labeled and they are used as preservatives. They may also contribute to hormone imbalance.


Usually found in: household products, skincare products, and deodorants


10. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)


This ingredient is used in products to adjust the melting point and thickness. It can also alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor.


Usually found in: cleansers to dissolve oil and grease


11. Propylene Glycol (PG) & Butylene Glycol


The rate at which this ingredient penetrates the skin weakens the protein and cellular structure.


12. Siloxanes


This chemical is used in a variety of cosmetics and is a suspected endocrine disrupter. Ingredients ending in -siloxane or -methicone contain siloxanes.
