Try These Essential Oils for Anxiety

If you had the chance to read the about me page on the website then you know that I have been learning how to manage my anxiety for the past eight years. I tried medication for about two years, but that just didn’t work for my body. By no means am I saying that medication won’t work for you, but it just didn't work for me. However, what has been working are essential oils! I am not saying that essential oils get rid of anxiety completely, but they have definitely helped relieve some of the symptoms.

In previous blogs I explained how beneficial essential oils are for your mental health, but I want to go in depth about how they work topically. Your skin is the largest organ on your body and absorbs EVERYTHING you put on it. Since the skin is porous, when essential oils are applied topically they seep through the skin and enter the blood stream. This is how they travel and deliver their benefits all over the body.

Side note: I want you to take a look at the ingredients in your favorite body wash, soap, lotion, etc. Everything on that list enters your blood stream. Some of the most harmful ingredients are Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA), DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance + Parfum, Parabens, Retinyl Palmitate, and Triethanolamine. The negative side effects include:

· Formation of tumors after sun exposure

· Hormone disruptions

· Endocrine disruptions

· Breast cancer

· Allergies and asthma

I think I speak for everyone when I say nobody wants to deal with that.

Okay, back to essential oils for anxiety. Before you can apply them on your body they have to be diluted to reduce skin irritation. Here is a list of oils that help relieve symptoms of anxiety

1. Valerian

Contains compounds that promote sleep and calm nerves. Also has a mild sedative effect on the body.

2. Jatamansi

Calms the mind and encourages sleep.

3. Lavender

(My absolute favorite) Calms anxiety by impacting the limbic system which is the part of the brain that controls emotions.

4. Jasmine

Calms the nervous system without causing sleepiness.

5. Holy basil

Treats mental and physical stress.

6. Sweet basil

Calms the mind and relieves stress.

7. Bergamot

Relieves anxiety and improves mood.

8. Chamomile

Relaxing and sedating properties.

9. Rose

Its floral scent relaxes the senses.

10. Vetiver

Has anti-anxiety abilities similar to the drug diazepam.
